Biotechnology Lab
Biotechnology is a research-oriented science including a fusion of biology and technology. The department has a spacious laboratory, equipped with the latest instruments and apparatus including PCR, inverted microscope, hot air oven, UV trans-illuminator, high precision electronic weighing balances, incubator shaker, UV- Vis spectrophotometer, laminar air flow cabinet, deep freezer, colorimeter, pH meter, Distillation Unit, cold room, refrigerated centrifuge, micro-centrifuge, multiple electrophoresis units, BOD incubator and autoclave facility to smoothly carry out microbiological, biochemical and molecular biological experiments for undergraduates and postgraduates. We also have a well-established plant tissue culture facility for micropropagation and plant metabolite production. Annual final semester projects are being done in diverse fields including microbiology, industrial biotechnology, enzymology, food biotechnology, plant biotechnology and biochemistry using the laboratory facilities. To acquire additional training in the field of Biotechnology, students are placed in research institutions and organizations during summer. The department also provides assistance to students and faculty outside campus and from other departments to carry out various microbiological, biochemical and molecular biological experiments. Mushroom cultivation, Biocontrol agent Production and Vermicomposting are some of the value added courses provided for undergraduate students. The Department has also proven its social commitment at the time of natural calamities such as providing free drinking water quality analysis after the onset of flood in 2018.
