Department of Malayalam
History of the Department of Malayalam starts from the very first line of St. Joseph’s College itself. The Department is proud that, since 1964 the Department has always been with St. Joseph’s College in all its activities.
Our department has realized the fact that ‘Educating a woman means educating a Family. Therefore, we the Department of Malayalam gave full support in college’s endeavors.
In addition to imparting knowledge to students in Malayalam we have also taken a step further by introducing a programme in audio visual, in 2003 itself, which would aid the students to cope up with the needs of the modern world. The Department thus works to keep pace with the new thinking of modern society.
Admission Criterion Procedure
The college publishes the prospectus/Brochures in each year and advertises in the College Website for UG and PG. Students having graduation from any recognized University can apply as per guidelines.
Milestones
In 2013, the College started PG Malayalam in aided stream. That was a milestone in the history of the department. 21 is the intake at present. All the students got placed in various schools and other departments. Two students cleared NET and joined for research.
In 2018 The department started a vocational course in Malayalam at UG level. That too was a golden feather in the history of Malayalam. The course named BVoc Malayalam and Manuscript Management was introduced with the financial aid from UGC in BVOC Scheme. From 2021 onwards, this course turned to self-financing scheme as per UGC and State Government Orders. Through this course the students trained in ancient scripts, document preservation, palm leaf preservation, computational Malayalam, editing and publication of manuscripts, palm leaf production, ink production and so on.

There is a unique facility for mauscript research in the laboratory.
Script Garden
The department started another unique project, SCRIPT GARDEN- an eco-friendly garden for ancient scripts.
