Integrated M.Sc. Biology
The Integrated M.Sc. Programme in Biology offered by our department is a five-year (ten-semester) programme conducted under the Choice Based Credit and Semester System (CBCSS) of the University of Calicut.
This innovative programme provides a continuous academic pathway from undergraduate to postgraduate level, eliminating the need for separate admissions between degrees. Students are introduced to the foundations of life sciences in the early semesters and gradually progress to advanced topics, research methodologies, and specialized electives in the later years.
The curriculum is designed to nurture scientific thinking, research aptitude, and interdisciplinary awareness through laboratory sessions, field studies, seminars, and project work.
UG Programme (Exit Option after Semester 6)
Students enrolled in the Integrated M.Sc. Biology Programme who wish to exit the course after three years (six semesters) are eligible to receive a B.Sc. Degree in Biology, as per the University of Calicut exit regulations.
This exit option ensures flexibility for students who wish to pursue employment, teaching, or other postgraduate programmes elsewhere after completing the undergraduate component.
The UG phase focuses on developing a strong conceptual understanding of biological sciences, coupled with hands-on training in laboratory and field-based techniques.
Integrated M.sc Biology Programme
Integrated M.Sc biology programme is a five year programme under choice based credit and semester system. This is the first ever MSc Integrated Biology course offered by a women’s college under the University of Calicut. The Syllabus of the Foundation Programme aims to inculcate and develop scientific research temper among students. Since this programme covers the entire CSIR syllabus, the students after completing this course can clear various national and international level competitive exams and grab a bright carrier with international standards. The programme follows language reduced patterns with General courses; Biochemistry, Environmental science and water management, Biotechnology and Genetics. The core courses include Biomolecules, Ecology biodiversity and conservation biology, Principles of taxonomy and Research methodology, Physiology, Molecular biology and Bioinformatics, Cell biology, Developmental biology, Microbiology, Evolutionary biology, Immunology and the Elective core courses include Drug design and gene therapy, stem cell and regenerative medicine, Cancer biology. The complementary courses for the programme are Statistics and Chemistry which will also help the students in analyzing the data during their research. This programme helps the students to understand and develop technical skills in biological science especially biochemistry, biotechnology, bioinformatics and biostatistics. Since this field is an application oriented field, focus is also given in providing practical knowledge by conducting various laboratory experiments.
The syllabus focuses on realist approach whereby application of theoretical concepts is imparted with substantial coverage of practical and field works. The attempt is to prepare the students for lifelong learning by drawing attention to the vast world of knowledge in various branches of Biology.

The Postgraduate segment of the Integrated Programme corresponds to the final two years (semesters 7–10). In addition, students holding a relevant B.Sc. degree from institutions affiliated to the University of Calicut or equivalent universities are eligible for lateral entry into the fourth year (Semester 7), subject to University norms and merit-based selection. Upon successful completion of all four semesters of M.Sc. programme and the acquisition of the required credit as prescribed in the syllabus students will be awarded the degree of M.Sc. Biology.
This advanced level provides students with opportunities for research projects, dissertation work, and specialization in contemporary areas of biology such as molecular biology, genetics, environmental science, and biotechnology.
Graduates from this programme are well-equipped for higher research, global career opportunities, and professional advancement in academia, healthcare, and industry.
Five-Year Integrated Programme (FYIP) in Biology
The Five-Year Integrated M.Sc. Programme in Biology, offered under the Choice Based Credit and Semester System (CBCSS) of the University of Calicut, provides a seamless and flexible academic path from undergraduate to postgraduate levels.
This comprehensive programme is structured to help students develop a deep understanding of biological systems, from molecular mechanisms to ecosystem dynamics, integrating theoretical learning, laboratory practice, and research exposure.
Our college proudly stands as the only women’s college in Thrissur offering the Five-Year Integrated M.Sc. Programme in Biology affiliated to the University of Calicut.
The programme aims to foster scientific excellence, leadership, and sustainability-oriented innovation among young women aspiring to make a global impact in the life sciences.
Programme Overview
The FYIP in Biology spans ten semesters (five academic years) and is designed to align with the FYUGP credit structure. It offers students the flexibility to exit at multiple stages with recognized qualifications, ensuring both academic and professional mobility.
- Three-Year UG Degree (Exit after 6 Semesters): Students completing the first six semesters (earning a minimum of 133 credits) are awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology as per University regulations.
- Four-Year UG Honours Degree (Exit after 8 Semesters): Students completing eight semesters (earning a minimum of 177 credits) are eligible for a Sc. Honours Degree in Biology.
- Those choosing the Honours with Research option must complete a research project or dissertation under faculty supervision.
- Students opting for Honours without research can complete three additional elective courses (12 credits) in place of the project.
- Five-Year Integrated PG Degree (Exit after 10 Semesters): Students who complete all ten semesters and acquire a total of 221 credits are conferred the Master of Science (M.Sc.) Degree in Biology.
Programme Objectives
- To nurture a comprehensive understanding of modern biological sciences through integrated learning.
