B.SC. Chemistry (Aided)

B.SC. Chemistry (SF)

B.Sc in Chemistry is an undergraduate three-year programme that is divided into six semesters. We offer Bachelor of Science in Chemistry affiliated to University of Calicut with Mathematics and Physics as complementary subjects. The course provides knowledge of Science in the chemical field of study by offering subjects like atomic chemistry, organic chemistry, application of computers in chemistry, etc. The course covers theoretical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry branches with Polymer Chemistry as an elective paper. Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry practicals are integral part of this core course. After pursuing B.Sc in Chemistry, candidates can get a number of opportunities including Chemical Engineering Associate, forensic scientist, geochemist, hazardous waste chemist, materials scientist, pharmacologist, toxicologist, water chemist, Lab Chemist, Production Chemist, Analytical Chemist, etc. Chemistry graduates can also go for further studies like M.Sc in Chemistry. Also, we offer complementary chemistry theory paper and practical to B.Sc. BioTech., B.Sc. Botany and B.Sc. Zoology courses. It is advisable to score more than 55% in the higher secondary level to stand eligible for this course.

M.sc. Chemistry (Aided)

M.Sc Chemistry or Master of Science in Chemistry is a career-oriented postgraduate course of 2 years. We offer Master of Science in Chemistry affiliated to University of Calicut. The course covers theoretical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry branches. Synthetic organic chemistry and organometallic chemistry are elective papers in third and fourth semesters, respectively. Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry practicals are integral part of this course. The course demands a project report to be submitted to the university at the end of the course. The course is specially curated for the students willing to gain a more powerful grip over the areas of chemical reactions and chemical composition of substances.

The basic eligibility to pursue M.Sc Chemistry is a graduate degree in Chemistry with at least 50% or more marks. Students can also go for a M.Phil or a Ph.D in Chemistry after successfully acquiring this degree. Pursuing a higher degree will not only serve as a gateway to advance work opportunities in the field but will also offer immense knowledge of the subject. After pursuing M.Sc in Chemistry, candidates can get a number of opportunities including Teacher, Professor, Synthetic Lab Scientist, Research Officer (Chemistry/ Biochemistry), Solid State Chemistry Expert, Analytical Specialist, etc.

Gemology

Gemology is the science of studying gems that have emerged as a new line of study. This unique profession is not just limited to laboratories besides identifying and evaluating gemstones. Candidates who hold a certificate in Gemology will find innumerable job opportunities across the world.

Research and PG Department of Chemistry , St. Joseph’s college Irinjalakuda is conducting a one year certificate course on Gemology for second year Bachelor’s degree students.  Syllabus covers theory and practical sessions. Department is equipped with Gemology lab with all facilities.

These are the first-level courses in Gemology that deal with all the basic information regarding identifying different gemstones. The duration of this course is one year. Candidates who registered for the course will learn about various techniques and instruments used in the Gemmological industry. Department has collaborated with Flame Diamonds and Manufactures, Thrissur for providing industrial training and experience.

Candidates who take up Gemology course will learn about the identification and colouring of stones besides occurrence of the stones and will be taught on the stones’ physical and optical properties. They will also learn about the identification of naturally occurring gems.

CISCOM

Chemistry In Service of Common Man (CISCOM) is a certificate course offered by the chemistry department, intended to train the students and local community to prepare common household chemicals such as soap, shampoo, detergent, hand wash, hand sanitiser, toilet cleaner, pain relief bam…etc. This course is conducted in collaboration with Science Center, Methala, Kodungallur. These products are used in everyday life, so it is relevant to know the ingredients (mainly chemicals) and their composition. Many of the products available in the market are harmful due to the excessive use of chemicals. As part of the certificate course (CISCOM), we conduct workshops with experts once a year to teach students how to make these products safe, low-cost, and efficient. It is an opportunity for students to come together as teams, expand their creativity, and develop new areas of interest.

CISCOM Syllabus

Chemistry Department was raised to a research centre, affiliated to the University of Calicut, in 2009. The department offers PhD programme in various fields of chemistry (Visit faculty web page to know more about areas of research). Admission to PhD programme is as per the norms of Calicut University.
