The three-year undergraduate B A Economics programme is designed to produce economists who are socially engaged, quantitatively trained, historically informed, and philosophically grounded. Economics is an integral part of a well-rounded liberal arts education and has emerged as one of the most sought-after subjects of study in social sciences. Economics is about choice and is at the heart of all decision-making. Individuals, businesses, and governments are all faced with making choices in situations where resources are scarce and as a result, economics is applicable in a wide range of fields including business, finance, administration, law, local and national government, and indeed most aspects of everyday life. Learning about economics helps you understand the major problems facing the world today, prepares you to be a good citizen, and helps you become a well-rounded thinker. Many careers which require the understanding and analysis of contemporary events will also be enhanced by the study of B A Economics.

Eligibility for admission

Any candidate who passed Plus Two of the Higher Secondary Board of Kerala or equivalent examinations of any other University or Board of Examinations in any state is recognized as equivalent to Plus Two of the Higher Secondary Board in Kerala. However, the candidates who have studied Economics for the qualifying examinations shall be given some weightage while calculating the index marks for admission.

M A Economics

MA Economics course offers a comprehensive understanding of relevant theories and current economic issues allowing you to prepare you for job profiles that demand numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills such as financial management, market research, business planning, budgeting, and resource allocation. Globalization and the merging of the world economy have further enhanced job prospects. The programme offers training in the understanding and critical evaluation of economic policy issues, design and solutions, their foundation in the evolution of economic theory and methods, as well as critical discussion of the application of policy design to real-world problems. It offers distinctive core modules that enable students to engage with debates in Economic theory and policy in advanced as well as developing regions. It also provides a programme structure that develops qualitative and quantitative research capabilities.

Add-On  Course on Flower Making- 2016-17

This course is designed to develop the creative and employability skills of the students. Making fabulous flowers that look like real flowers is immensely satisfying. After the completion, of course, the students can create various types of artificial flowers and market them. This is a 35 hours course with a perfect blend of theory and practical hands-on instructions. The sessions are trying to amalgamate the creative and imaginative power of the learner. The sessions are handled by experts in art and craft making. The ultimate aim of the course is to enable the learners to become self-employed people and open new horizons in the field of art and craft.

Add-On Course on Word Processing and Data Entry Operator-2017-18 and 2018-19

Since most Offices use computer systems these days, data entry has become an integral part of day-to-day office tasks.  Data entry skills are essential to improve the employability and soft skills of a student. Word processing and data entry operator courses enable the learners to gain good proficiency in computer-based operational and administration tasks. The main aim of this program is to familiarize students with computers and data entry. The course provides computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet, PowerPoint, etc…This will help them to get job opportunities in government and non-governmental organizations. This is a six months course including theoretical and practical sessions. This course is a PSC approved and recognized by the government of Kerala.

Add-On Course on Foundation Programme in Banking and Financial Services- 2019-2020

Awareness about banking and financial services is important in everyday life. The certificate course “Foundation Programme in Banking and Financial Services” is designed to deliver basic knowledge about banking and financial services to the learner and to sculpt students into hard-core finance professionals armed with expertise in Investment Banking and Capital Markets. This will enable the learners to acquire a career in the banking and financial sector. This is a 40 hours course offered by the Department in association with Hedge School of Applied Economics, Kochi. The sessions are handled by certified trainers in the field of the financial sector.

In the present globalized world, financial institutions and markets play a significant role. The financial sector liberalization across the world including India has led to unprecedented growth in the financial sector, leading to the introduction of new and diversified financial instruments and financial practices, providing ample career opportunities to the students of economics. This course is designed to give an exposure to the students of economics to the changing world of financial markets and to give them an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the basic concepts related to banking which they read in newspapers and hear and see-through electronic media in their daily walks of life. The course also aims at providing a platform for students of economics in developing the skills required to take up a career in the financial sector and to provide them an opportunity to think of higher studies in finance which may open them the vast career opportunities in the field of finance.

Add-On Course on Digital Skills for Beginners 2020-2021

The Digital revolution has made a difference in almost every aspect of the modern world. Nearly everything we do these days involves a level of digital skill. Furthermore, this is only going to become more prevalent as technology continues to advance, integrate with our lives and be part and parcel of our everyday work lives. The certificate course “Digital Skills for beginners” will introduce the learner to what digital means, how it’s changing the way we live and work, and how the learner can learn the skills and gain the confidence needed in the increasingly digital workplace. The course duration is 40 hours including recorded and live classes. The classes are handled by experts in each and every field. After the completion, of course, the students will get a course certificate.

Department endows with an Industrial visit for the exposure of students to the practical working environment. It is also a part of our curriculum vitae which inculcate the students with good opportunity to gain full knowledge about industrial practices. Through industrial visit students acquire awareness on new technologies.

Student Projects

Economic projects lay emphasize on the study of nation-building policy implications which create spur in them to solve the real life problems. Owing to this Department offers a sovereign project selection to the students. The core objective of the project work is to equip them to obtain a solution to the societal problems through the application of analytical skills of economics. They where modulated with the competent tutors in the journey of research.

Club Activities

Economics department students are the default members of Entrepreneurship Development Club. As part of the ED club numerous events are hosted and organized for the upliftment of the students like invited talks, seminars and competitions. The Primary Goal is to benefit and develop the aspiring entrepreneurs and it also acts as a platform for entrepreneurial skills.

Internatinal Conference And Workshops

Participation and presentation of papers in International and National conferences become a highlighted factor of the department. The main aim of the conferences and workshops are to gain a better insight into the subject. The students can widen their knowledge through these opportunities and indulge them into potential research activities. Additionally, the workshops will offer a platform for experiential learning which guarantees productive outcomes

Students are stimulated by providing several Government Recognized Certificate Courses which help them to showcase their competency and commitment towards their future profession. These skill oriented courses will build them as an expert in their career and life.
